SIDEWAYS LOOKS 2010

Sideways Looks 2010 is the annual show of student video, photography, journalism and web media produced by level 3 students on the BA Media and Cultural Studies course at the University of the West of England. Saturday 22 May is a one-day festival, with photographs and web media work on show, and films scheduled throughout the day from 10.00 until 19.00.

These students are studying for degrees in Media and Cultural Studies, Film Studies and Journalism, in a variety of joint and single honours courses in the Department of Culture, Media and Drama. Most of them study media and culture from theoretical, critical perspectives and their practice has developed over several modules during the course of their degree. Although they divide their time between media production and writing, they are very engaged, committed and articulate about their work. They are encouraged to develop media practices that are questioning and critical of existing media and of the ways in which our culture is usually represented.

The work on show is diverse – this year it includes documentary and fiction-based approaches. Projects look at a wide range of themes such as death and celebrity culture; images of femininity; race, identity and migration; drugs, fantasy and simulation, reflecting the range of subjects students investigate during the course of their degrees.

These students will go on to become professional film-makers,photographers, interactive media producers and journalists, as well as into teaching, researching, marketing, and the charity sector.

The Sideways Looks exhibition continues on Sunday 23 May, with films shown on request between 11.00 and 17.00.
